What is a catch-all (accept-all) email address?
If you verify enough addresses, you'll run into 'catch-all' (also called 'accept-all') results. They're one of the trickiest parts of email verification — and how a verifier handles them says a lot about its quality.
What a catch-all domain is
A catch-all domain is configured to accept email sent to any address at that domain — whether or not the specific mailbox exists. Send to anything@theircompany.com and the server says 'yes, I'll take it,' then figures out delivery later.
Because the server accepts everything at the SMTP level, a normal mailbox check can't confirm whether one specific address is real. That's why most verifiers label these addresses 'unknown.'
Why domains use catch-all
- To avoid losing mail sent to mistyped addresses (jon@ vs john@).
- To route everything to a single team inbox.
- As a side effect of certain hosting or forwarding setups (a common example is a forwarding service that accepts all mail and relays it).
Why catch-all addresses are risky
The address might be a real, active inbox — or it might not exist at all and quietly bounce after you send. You can't tell from the SMTP response alone. That uncertainty is why catch-all addresses belong in a 'risky' bucket rather than 'good' or 'bad.'
How to handle them
Don't blanket-delete catch-all addresses — many are perfectly valid and may be your best B2B contacts. Instead, treat them as risky: send to them in engaged, well-warmed segments, watch how they perform, and suppress the ones that bounce or never engage.
